Understanding Arthritis

Arthritis is the official name for conditions that cause inflammation, pain and stiffness in one or more joints in the body.

It worsens with age and is the cause of reduced or limited mobility in the body.

Types of Arthritis

There are more than 100 types of arthritis that affect adults – mainly people over the age of 65 – but it can also develop in younger adults, teenagers, and children.

Out of the 100, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis remain the most prevalent.

Osteoarthritis

From among the 10 million people affected by arthritis, nearly 9 million diagnoses account for osteoarthritis. Incidences are more common among adults in their mid-forties or over. Also, women and people with a family history of osteoarthritis seem to be affected more commonly.

However, it can also be triggered by an injury or another underlying health condition.

As the condition initiates its development, it begins in the smooth cartilage found covering joint linings. This not only causes pain and stiffness, but it also limits mobility in the joint. As the condition progresses, it weakens the cartilage and reached the tendons and ligaments, causing:

•    Swelling
•    Stiffness in the ligaments and tendons
•    Formation of spurs or osteophytes
•    Altered bone shape

It commonly affects the hands, knees, hips and the spine but can also be found in other joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Most prevalent in people over the age of 50, rheumatoid arthritis is the second most common type of arthritis.

Affecting 400,000+ people in the UK, this condition triggers the immune system to start attacking joints.

The most common symptoms of RA include pain and swelling caused by the swelling of the synovium or outer layer of the joint. It can progress and eventually spread across the joint, causing:

•    Further swelling
•    Misshapen joints
•    Worn cartilage and bone
•    Severe damage or break in the bone or cartilage
•    Problems in other tissues and organs

Arthritis in Children – Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

More than 15,000 children are affected by arthritis. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis or JIA has further sub-types that have varying symptoms, including pain and inflammation that can last for at least 6 weeks.

Other types of arthritis include gout, polymyalgia rheumatica, reactive arthritis, enteropathic arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis.

Arthritis Symptoms

Pain and swelling in one or more of the affected joints are the most common symptoms associated with arthritis.

Considering that there are 100 types of the condition, symptoms will vary. According to the NHS, the following are reported commonly by arthritis patients:

•    Tenderness
•    Stiffness
•    Inflammation
•    Decreased or limited mobility
•    Redness over the joint
•    Weakness in and around the joint

Arthritis Risk Factors
Family History
Some types of arthritis, especially osteoarthritis, pose a higher risk for individuals with a family history of the condition.

Your genetics and their response to certain external factors may increase your susceptibility.

Age

Despite JIA affecting hundreds of thousands of children around the world, arthritis is more common among people over the age of 40.

Sex

People born female are observed to be more susceptible
to certain types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Injury

Injury sustained to the joint in an accident, fall or while playing a sport can trigger arthritis as well.

Others

Obesity, smoking, infections, etc. can also increase the risk of developing or worsening the state of arthritis.

Treating Arthritis

There is no definite treatment for arthritis. Management of the condition is carried out to alleviate symptoms and slow down its progression.

Besides regular exercise and physiotherapy, symptoms are managed with medications, including:

•    NSAIDs or Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
•    OTC (over the counter) pain killers
•    Counterirritants
•    DMARDs or Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs
•    Corticosteroids
•    Biological Response Modifiers

In some cases, surgical intervention may be recommended.
